Kids in the Kitchen… Take 2!

We loved cooking with my Raddish kids boxes that I got for my birthday, so my friend and I decided to cook a meal for our families this weekend! It took us from 10 in the morning until 5 at night to get it all done, but we did great! We made a hot pink hummus for an appetizer, a hearty Bolognese sauce on pasta for dinner, and sweetheart cookies and brownies for dessert. We learned a lot of fun facts and cooking safety tips that we shared with everyone at dinner!

We made sure to read through all the recipes before we started so we were ready…

We decided to start with the cookies since they were going to take the longest time to prepare…

cook5

We learned that baking is precise and that we had to measure everything carefully. We also learned how to be safe with the mixer, and not to put it on high after you add the flour because it goes EVERYWHERE!

cook6

Our dough looked pretty good, and we had to refrigerate it before rolling it out since cold cookies are easier to roll and they don’t lose their shape when they are baking…

After they were baked and cooled, we had to finish them off with strawberry jam and powdered sugar!

We had an extra helper in the kitchen for this step…

They turned out super awesome!

Our next step in our meal was to work on the appetizer of hot pink hummus. We learned all about hummus and beets, and it turned out super colorful!

cook18

Beets are a natural dye, so we wore gloves so our hands didn’t get stained!

cook19

We made our own pita chips to dip in the hummus, and learned to be safe with the oven…

cook21

We learned a lot of new skills, like juicing a lemon, using a can opener, and blender safety tips…

After learning how to cut some carrot and celery sticks, our appetizer was ready!

COOK25

Our picky eaters weren’t too excited about this part of the meal…

cook26

Once our appetizer and dessert were ready, it was time to start on the main course! We learned about different sauces from Italy, and that a Bolognese sauce is a hearty sauce with meat and veggies!

cook27

Mom gave us a lesson in chopping vegetables…

cook28

And we learned how to use a vegetable peeler!

cook29

Everyone loved learning how to use the shredder… It’s not easy though!!!

We might need to work more on chopping more uniformly next time, but we were pretty happy with our efforts…

There was a lot to learn about stovetop safety before cooking dinner…

cook39

While we were busy cooking, Ben and Audrey were learning how to set a proper table. They learned where the silverware and cups go, and they even made everyone place cards so they know where to sit!

Raddish also sends cool conversation starters to keep the dinner conversation going!

cook44

We all made table decorations too…

cook45

We made crafts to represent our meal…. spaghetti, hummus and chips & heart cookies!

Putting the finishing touches on the table…

cook50

We make some cue cards so we could teach everyone at dinner the things we learned in the kitchen!

We had an awesome time, and love cooking! I wonder what is coming in my box next month?!?!?!?
