This morning we woke up in Melk, packed up our bags, and disembarked our first ship for a short bus ride to the famous Melk Abbey, and then another bus ride to a hotel in Vienna for the night.
Before going in to tour the Abbey, we checked out the gardens and the beautiful garden pavillion. The frescos inside the garden house were breathtaking!
We headed out of the pavillion and went for a tour of the beautiful Melk Abbey. Benedictine monks have lived here since 1089, and it is also the home of a school and one of Europe's most valuable libraries. Pictures were only allowed outside of the buildings, but the link above shows you the beauty we saw inside!
The views of Melk from the upper levels were breathtaking!
We enjoyed lunch in the Abbey's restaurant with some good friends we'd made on the trip.
Their traditional apricot cake was wonderful!
One more quick stroll around the gardens, and we were off on the bus to drive through the Wachau Valley on the way to our next stop in Vienna.
The Wachau Valley hills are filled with old castles, apricot trees, and rows and rows of vineyards. We're so thankful our bus driver was willing to drive the stunning 24 mile road so we could experience it!
On our drive, we got some glimpses of how low the river is in some spots, and why we definitely couldn't cruise this portion! It's crazy!
Goodbye to Melk, and onward to Vienna!
